Zero Carbon Footprint
Goals of Innovation: To optimize construction of zero energy homes at a cost-effective price for middle income families.
Description: Artistic Homes is a production builder across a span of 520 miles in five large subdivisions. The company's founders are enthusiastic and determined to ride in the forefront of low-impact home construction. The company has accomplished the design and construction of a zero energy, cost-effective and reproducible home. Each zero energy home is estimated to prevent 21,200 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year by generating all heating, cooling, lighting and domestic hot water by renewable solar at the home.
The construction of the homes further reduce impacts by using advanced framing techniques to reduce the use of lumber and especially products made from old growth timber, applying advanced sealing techniques to create an airtight home, and by using low-maintenance products and those with low potential for toxicity.
In the near future, the company plans to further reduce impacts in their homes and to pass this environmental and economic savings on to its customers.
Obstacles: It has been a challenging and educating experience to develop designs that can be applied in a variety of subdivisions on a variety of lots and orientations yet maintain a high standard of quality in daylighting, energy efficiency, and resource efficiency. National partners have provided guidance and certification throughout the process to help make the learning curve smoother and quicker.
Cost Information: The cost of this zero energy home is within reach of a middle income family.
